In this post, we’re going to be talking about getting your prospect to talk about themselves. And the best way to do that, is to ask questions. This is actually one of the principles in Dale Carnegie’s book, How To Win Friends And Influence People. In fact it is principle number 4, “Become a good listener and encourage people to talk about themselves”.

The Only Person Interested In You, Is You!

It’s a well known fact that the only person interested in you, is you. So when you ask your prospect questions, you’re getting your prospect to talk about themselves. And if they’re talking about themselves, they are at ease with you and in turn, you are in rapport.

Some Questions To Get You Started

  • So, what has recently changed in your life that has you looking at a network marketing business?
  • What would an extra $1000 a month change your life?
  • I’m just curious, why is it important for you to have more spare time for yourself and family?
  • So what is it about the morning rush-hour that you hate most?
  • Are you ok with your boss dictating when you have a vacation?

Can you see how good questions can get your prospect to talk about themselves? It’s easy isn’t it? Learn to become a good listener and encourage prospects to talk about themselves and you’ll gain instant rapport and make a connection.

And these 6 techniques are techniques that you can take with you and use today!

This is part 4 of my blog series How To Gain Instant Rapport With Your Prospects. In part 3 we learned how two words can put your prospects at ease and put you in instant rapport – read it here

Sales resistance comes from a human program in the subconscious mind called “Survival.” We are all born with this program and it is this “Survival” program that warns us of all sorts of dangers and keeps us safe.

A good example of this is when a baby comes into contact with a stranger. How does the baby know if the stranger is safe or dangerous? The baby instinctively looks for a smile. You see, when we smile at babies, they relax and smile back at us because they know we are safe and they lower their resistance towards us.

And it is the same with adults too. We are instinctively wary of people who we do not know. When you come into contact with strangers or pass people in the street, they will look at you to size you up, to try and work out if you are safe or if you are someone they should be wary of. But as soon as you give them a sincere and friendly smile, they lower their guard and return the smile because they know you are safe.

Try this experiment. Give a friendly and sincere smile to everyone you pass in the street and see how many people return your smile. You will be amazed!

So, your smile is one of your best rapport building tools as it instantly puts people at ease. And if people feel at ease with you, you are in rapport.

When you are talking to your prospect, you want to gain instant rapport and make a real connection. And you can do this just by using two simple words…..

….Most people….

These two words trigger a common human decision program in the subconscious mind of your prospect. Human nature being what it is, we as people feel safe with most people. We feel insecure when we are alone.

Would you rather walk through a dark alley or a bad part of town at night on your own, or with a group of people? With a group of people, right? Why? Because we feel safer as part of a group.

You can use “Most people…” in your statements to create instant rapport and connect with your prospect. See some examples below:

  • Most people would like to have a pay rise
  • Most people would like to have cheaper utility bills
  • Most people would like more disposable income
  • Most people would love to give up commuting in rush hour
  • Most people want to pay less taxes
  • Most people would like to travel more
  • Most people who see our opportunity get excited and join our team
  • Most people would like to have more quality family time
  • Most people would like to keep wrinkles at bay for another 10 years or more
  • Most people would like to have good health
  • Most people join our team at this level

You get the idea. Pretty easy, isn’t it? And you make up your own “Most people” statements that are most appropriate for your network marketing business or product or service.

People are naturally programmed to be wary of salesmen, as salesmen have an agenda and want to sell you something.

Now, you have probably heard the saying, “nobody likes to be sold to”. People like to buy from people. So, as a network marketer, how do you get people to feel like they are buying instead of feeling like they are being sold to?

Gain Instant Rapport With Your Prospects With This Simple Question

You can make people feel like they are buying from you instead of being sold to, by simply putting the control of the information flow in their hands. You see, when someone is giving a presentation, they are selling to you. When you ask questions, and they answer your questions, you are buying. Can you see the difference?

So, instead of pitching and presenting your opportunity, put your prospects in question-asking mode by asking them:

“What would you like to know first?”

And because your prospects are asking the questions, they think they are in control of the conversation and that they are buying from you. It’s easy and polite.

Nobody likes a one-way conversation where the salesman is talking at us and selling to us. So, make sure you ask your prospects, “What would like to know first?” as soon as possible in the conversation.

You see, when most network marketers are prospecting and talking to strangers, they tend to lead with their product or service. Now, bearing in mind that these prospects are sceptical and sales resistant, it’s not hard to see why it all goes wrong very quickly.

As a network marketer, you have about 6 – 10 seconds to gain rapport with your prospects or you are toast! Mastering how to create instant rapport by talking to your prospect’s subconscious mind is one of the first skills you need to learn in network marketing. Fortunately, this skill is not hard to learn. And it’s fun too!!

How To Create Instant Rapport With Your Prospects: Technique #1

Video: Gain Instant Rapport With These Four Words – “Well, You Know How…”

Well, you know how….

The first technique is to use these four simple words, “Well, you know how..(followed by a fact)”

When you say these four words, nod and smile at the same time. Why? Because your prospect will react by nodding and smiling too. And if your prospect is nodding and smiling, they are agreeing with you and if they are in agreement with you, you are in rapport!

These four words attack a program in your prospect’s subconscious mind and your prospect is thinking, “Well, if I already know this, then it must be true. Whatever you say next, I’m going to believe you”.

Here are some examples that you can use straight away:

Well, you know how……

  • …..gas and electricity bills keep going up.
  • …..it is hard to get a pay raise these days.
  • …..putting your children through private school is expensive.
  • …..you don’t have the time to play golf as often as you would like.
  • …..people take vitamin supplements to stay healthy.
  • …..everybody wants to be fit.
  • …..everyone loves to get a greetings card.
  • …..people hate wrinkles.
  • …..we all get utility bills.
  • …..jobs interfere with our week.
  • …..two paychecks are better than one.
  • …..every mom wants to be home with her babies.
  • …..the economy is in the toilet.

With opening statements like these, your prospect will think, “Yeah. We’re on the same page. You’re on my wavelength…..I like this guy”.
